Style Guide

A note from me

Preparing for your session may feel a little stressful, but rest assured, I’ve put together this comprehensive guide to use as a resource when preparing for your photography session. In this guide, we’ll cover recommended colors and textures, flattering wardrobe pieces for all body types, along with clothing links for you, your partner, and kiddos!

I’ve taken out the hassle of shopping and hand selected pieces that will photograph beautifully so it’s one less thing for you to worry about!

Selecting a color palette

When selecting outfits, consider the color palette of your photo session location. A lot of inspiration can be pulled from the location of your session, and coordinating with the surroundings will make for a more cohesive and thoughtful look. If your session is near water, like a beach or riverfront, consider wearing shades of gray or blue to coordinate with the setting.

I love how the family pictured used light shades of beige and gray to tie in with the ston ruins at their session. I also love the variety of the dress lengths and fun textures in the floral and cable knit sweaters to give more interest.

Styling Tip

Neutrals and subdued earth tones will always be timeless and classic. Bold and bright colors have a tendency to overpower and distract. If you want to incorporate a color into your outfits, choose a muted shade like slate blue instead of royal blue. Avoid busy patterns, bold, or contrasting colors. Pastels are always a great option for any season, especially in the spring.

What to Wear

For Him

Some ideas for the guys are: white or cream button down shirts, light gray sweaters, long or short sleeve henley tops, polos, or even just a plain gray, white, or pastel t-shirt with a nicer pair of khakis or chinos.

Footwear: Opt for a nice pair of suede or leather boots, oxfords, or clarks.

Avoid wearing tennis shoes, sandals, athletic wear, hats, graphic t-shirts, or shirts with logos. Some patterns are okay as long as the print is very subtle, but avoid busy prints such as flannel, checkered, or paisley print.

For Her

Flowy a-line dresses are a great choice for family photos. They are flattering on every body type and comfortable to move around in when you have to chase after the little ones! Smocked bodices, puff sleeves, shoulder ties and soft floral prints are also a fun playful touch! To give your photos a more lighter, brighter, and crisper look, choose a soft cream or pastel color for your family color scheme.

Avoid bold and bright colors, loungewear, and loud prints. Smaller prints are great because they can add texture and interest, but larger floral or stripe designs distract. If you decide to wear jeans or pants, opt for a light denim wash or white, and carry this look throughout your family’s clothing choices too. A white or cream lace blouse would also dress up your outfit to elevate the overall look of your session.

For the kids

For children, rompers, dresses, bloomers or pants with cardigan sweaters are all great options. Don’t forget the fun accessories like knee high socks, headbands, or bows! Below are a few of my favorite children’s clothings brands.

Final Tips

Treat yourself to a fresh hair cut and color, manicure, and pedicure, or a facial a few days before! Little details go a long way. Plus, when you feel good, it’ll give you a confidence boost and in turn will shine through in your photographs! Consider soft curls or a simple and timeless hairstyle. For guys, make sure your hair and facial hair is trimmed up and your sideburns are neat.

Have fun! We all want to have a good time, right?! Kids can tell if you’re stressed and it’ll rub off of them during the session. Prep your kids by telling them that you’re going to a park and will get a chance to run around in the flowers and play some games with mom and dad! Go with the flow and let the kids guide how the session will go. Maybe we need a few minutes to let them run around mom and dad while we get shots of you two! I always recommend listening to your favorite music on the way to your session to get you all pumped up and in a good mood!

Another tip, pretend like I’m not there. The more in your own world, the better! Of course, I will direct when needed, but I love documenting couples and families interacting with each other on their own. Play ring around the rosy, hold hands and swing your kiddos, pick up your babe and play airplane with them! This will be sure to get those adorable giggles out and make for some amazing photos.

I can’t wait to meet and photograph your beautiful family during this stage of life! Thank you for booking with me and allowing me the opportunity to do so!
